On October 5th the Girl's Varsity Tennis Team held their Senior Night against the Grizzlies of Mission Hills. The matchup proved to be a back-and-forth dual to the very end. The Bulldogs came out on top with a 9-9 tiebreaker win (71 games to Mission Hills’ 68 games). This win pushed the team to a 7-0 record in league (14-1 record overall) which clinched them a Palomar League Title.
After the conclusion of the matches, Coach Troy Romero had a few words to say about the integral role that the three seniors have played in the team's success this season. He began by talking about co-captain Hannah Ferguson; “Hannah is the best captain, probably, we’ve ever had in my years of coaching. [This is] because she cares so much about the team.”
Coach Troy puts an emphasis on the leadership qualities of Hannah and even details how she has adapted somewhat of a coaching role on the team, going on to say; “I think she genuinely sees herself, at least in part, as a coach. And trying to help and mentor the younger players. So it's very exciting to see that.” He then talks about the other co-captain Isa Wilson and how her flexibility as a player and a leader has positively affected the team not only during this season but in all four of her seasons on the RHS Girls Tennis Team.
Coach Troy stated “She played singles and doubles as a Freshman and then singles her Sophomore year, doubles her Junior year, and then back to singles [For her Senior season].” It is imperative for successful programs to have players who are willing to step into a utility position for the benefit of the team and Isa does exactly that. Lastly, Coach Romero talked about Galilea Martinez. “That’s what you want to have in a Bulldog…” he states. “[She’s] somebody that comes to practice everyday, on time, good attitude, good spirit, practices hard, and plays her best.” Coach Troy views Galilea as an example for the younger players on the team, her hard work and dedication towards the sport is something that the underclassmen should hope to emulate. The success of the team only hopes to continue as they finish up their last few games in the Palomar League. The Bulldogs have their sights set on a deep run into Division 1 CiF playoffs and beyond.
